barcelona cathedral in barcelona, spain

Unlike the Sagrada Familia (known as a church and not a cathedral), the Barcelona Cathedral holds the seat of the Archbishop of Barcelona, Spain.  This beautiful gothic structure was built between the 13th and 15th centuries, dedicated to Eulalia of Barcelona (co-patron saint of Barcelona), a young virgin who suffered martyrdom during Roman times.  Saint Eulalia's body is entombed in the cathedral's crypt.

sagrada família in barcelona, spain

During my trip to Spain last year, I had the chance to visit one of the most beautiful and unique churches of the world, the Sagrada Família in Barcelona, Spain, by famed architect, Antoni Gaudí (1852 - 1926).  This church is also known as the Basilica and Expiatory Church of the Holy Family.  Construction on this started in 1882 and Gaudí became involved (and took over this project) in 1883, incorporating Gothic and Art Nouveau styles of architecture.  Gaudí then died in 1926 when only 25% of this project was complete.  Relying solely on private donations ever since, this building's completion date is anticipated to now be in 2026!
